The rising cost of private education is prompting some families to think more creatively about how their property might generate additional income.
Featured recently in The Times, Ben Horne, Head of Country Buying at Middleton Advisors, has seen this begin to influence the priorities of some country house buyers.
“In the past an annexe was good for when friends came to stay,” says Ben. “Now it seems to be a popular way of making a little bit of extra money that helps with school fees. There’s a real desire from people to find ways to generate an income from their property.”
For some families, annexes, cottages and other secondary accommodation can offer both flexibility and the potential for an additional income stream.
It is another consideration shaping the country house search, as buyers look not only at how they want to live, but at how a property might work for them over the longer term.
